Crazy for the Sun: Public Solar Viewing - 9 August, 2024

“Woke up in the morning, with the sun on my mind….” Whoa! That’s enough of that 😊. Now, to be fair, our resident weather guru had said the night before, “You’ll think I’m mad for going ahead with the session tomorrow.” And when I woke up, it was raining, and I thought, “He’s nuts!” 😊 But sure enough, it started to clear up, and by the time we got to the Royal Observatory, it was warm, and the sun started to show itself from behind some clouds.

So, we swiftly got on with the setup as we were due to start at 11. Well, guess what? We were all set up by around 10:20, and wouldn’t you know it - “it’s a kind of magic”- we started to get members of the public coming up to have a look through the scope, and that was it. If you set up, they will come 😊, and they never stopped! I would say over 600 came - thankfully not all at once, but at times the queue was stretching almost to the Meridian Line.

And our sun, “Solaris,” the main attraction, must have been showing off - throwing a cosmic party with prominences, filaments, and sunspots all over the place! It’s like the sun decided to put on its best dress and dance across the cosmos.

And as the sun dipped lower, a huge thank you to all our volunteers who brought their sun-crazy enthusiasm to the day. Thanks also to everyone who stopped by - whether a first-timer or a seasoned sun-gazer, you made it all worthwhile. Here’s to more sunny days ahead!
