Despite a less-than-promising forecast, we went ahead with our planned solar viewing session at the Royal Observatory Greenwich on Good Friday, 18 April. Earlier in the week, it had looked like the weather might force a full cancellation, but a welcome window of clear skies in the morning gave us just enough time to justify the event – even though we knew we’d likely need to finish early.

In the end, we packed up just after 1pm, but not before welcoming around 200 visitors. The Coronado scope was in use throughout the session, as a minor issue with the Lunt still needs to be resolved.

Solar features on show included multiple sunspots and plenty of filaments across the surface. Prominences were small and faint, requiring a bit of perseverance to spot.

A big thank you to our volunteer team for the day: Eddie, Sara, David, Simon, Clive, Yvonne, Alec, Mike, Tim, and Richard. Special mention to Sara, who took part in her first event and quickly found her stride explaining the Sunspotter to our visitors.

All in all, a short session – but an enjoyable way to spend Good Friday!

Our next solar viewing is planned for 3 or 4 May, with our rescheduled training evening taking place on 29 April.
