We have all seen extraordinary photographs whether take by Hubble or by highly-skilled amateur astronomers. But the work of Andrew McCarthy combines great technical skill with a creativity that truly takes his photography to a level rarely seen elsewhere.

From his home in Sacramento, California, he produces unique and scientifically-truthful imagery that reveal so much about celestial objects. His photographs of the Moon’s terminator are astounding and what he has done with photographs of Saturn is eye-popping. Andrew’s high-resolution images reveal extraordinary detail while his use of Nasa data enables us to see the Moon in a way we’ve never seen it before. He blends different wavelengths to create beautiful, original images and also creates pin-sharp images of the ISS transiting the Sun.

It was only in 2017 that Andrew McCarthy got his first telescope – a Dobsonian, ill-suited to astrophotography. But since then he has totally immersed himself in the field, producing truly fabulous images that are not only technically demanding but technically creative. He recently left the IT industry and is now a full-time professional astrophotographer, using the artist sponsorship platform Patreon to provide his followers with access to his most extraordinary work.
