About the Event

Chinese astronomy is one of the world’s oldest and most enduring traditions of sky-watching, weaving together celestial knowledge, cultural meaning, and scientific innovation.

In this talk, we’ll journey through the historical systems that shaped Chinese understandings of the cosmos, from lunar mansions and imperial star charts to the remarkable instruments used in ancient observatories. Anchored in the Chinese astronomy planetarium shows previously delivered at Greenwich, we’ll revisit some of the stories shared with audiences and consider how this programme might evolve under the First Light project.

We’ll conclude with a brief look at the present and future of Chinese astronomy, exploring how ancient traditions continue to inspire modern space exploration.
