Celestial Mapping by Prof Nick Kanas

Nick is Professor of Psychiatry at the University of California, San Francisco.  His book ‘Star Maps: History, Artistry, and Cartography’ is in its second printing

The Big Bang by Dr Simon Singh

Simon has specialised in writing about mathematical and scientific topics in an accessible manner.  His works include Fermat’s Last Theorem, The Code Book (about cryptography and its history), and Big Bang (about the Big Bang theory and the origins of the Universe).  He has also produced documentaries and works for television to accompany his books, is a trustee of NESTA, the National Museum of Science & Industry, and co-founded the Undergraduate Ambassadors Scheme.

The New Theory of Gravity by Dr Stuart Clark

Stuart is one of the UK’s most widely read astronomy journalists, formerly editor of Astronomy Now. He currently spends his time writing books, punctuating this with work for the European Space Agency, New Scientist, BBC Focus, and BBC Sky at Night.  Stuart is a Fellow of the RAS and a former Chair of the Association of British Science Writers.

Annual Christmas Party And also The Star of Bethlehem, by Prof. David Hughes

Professor David Hughes now retired, was a professor of Astronomy at the University of Sheffield, where he has worked since 1965.  Hughes has published over 200 research papers on asteroids, comets, meteorites and meteoroids.  He has also written on the history of astronomy, the origin of the solar system and the impact threat to planet Earth.  Asteroid 4205 was named in his honour.

Hughes has often appeared on TV, most notably with the live coverage of the ESA Giotto space mission to Halley's Comet, and with discussions of the Star of Bethlehem.

The Universe in three-dimensions by Greg Smye-Rumsby

Greg is a freelance astronomer and graphic artist.  He presents planetarium shows and hosts ‘Evenings with the Stars’ and other sessions at the ROG.  Many examples of his graphics work can be seen every month in Astronomy Now magazine.

Solar Story: Understanding the Sun.

To coincide with the Observatory's latest exhibition, ROG Curator Rebekah Higgitt and Public Astronomer Marek Kukula will tell the story of our changing view of the Sun, from early observations up to the latest discoveries about our local star, with a special emphasis on work done here at the ROG. The exhibition Solar Story runs from January 16th to May 9th in the Astronomy Centre.

Dr Rebekah Higgitt is Curator of History of Science and Technology at the Royal Observatory, Greenwich. She has published work on biographies of Isaac Newton and the British Association for the Advancement of Science and is currently researching the histories of the Royal Observatory and the Board of Longitude.

After completing his doctorate at Jodrell Bank Observatory Dr Marek Kukula carried out research into black holes and distant galaxies at a number of institutions including the University of Edinburgh and the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore, home of NASA's Hubble Space Telescope; as Public Astronomer at the Royal Observatory, Greenwich Marek is responsible for bringing astronomy to a wider audience via the Observatory's exhibitions and public programmes as well as through the media.
