Programme of events 2005-6

Meetings will start with reports from our sub-committees and a chat about topics of interest by a Flamsteed member before the main lecture or event of the evening.   Unless otherwise stated all meetings will be in the Lecture Theatre of the National Maritime Museum (NMM) and will run from 7.00 - 10.00 p.m.  Members are welcome to arrive early for a cup of coffee and to meet other members before the meetings start.

 

2005

August 7, Sunday:  12.30pm onwards - Annual picnic. Join other members for a lunchtime picnic beside the Queen’s House, NMM.  Family and friends very welcome.  Bring your own picnic.  We will be setting up the H-alpha telescope for a solar viewing session.

September 2—4, Friday to Sunday:  Visit to Paris via Eurostar, including a guided tour of the Paris Observatory on the Saturday afternoon.

September 23, Friday:  Successes and Problems of Contemporary Cosmology.  A lecture by Prof. Michael Joyce of the Department of Physics, Paris University.  Lecture Theatre NMM

October 10, Monday:   Our Annual General Meeting; followed by a lecture by the ROG’s Dr Robert Massey on Comets — Messengers from Deep Space.  Lecture Theatre NMM

November 7, Monday: The Annual BookMart, followed by Astrophotography and wide-field CCD Imaging, a talk by Ian King with practical demonstrations.  Lecture Theatre NMM

December 5,  Monday:  Flamsteed Annual Christmas Party at the National Maritime Museum Greenwich.  Food, drink, musical entertainment, and maybe a tantalising quiz with prizes that will make your jaw drop in amazement!

 

2006

January 9, Monday:  Where East Meets West — a talk by Graham Dolan of the ROG who will discuss the astronomical basis of the Prime Meridian.  Lecture Theatre NMM

January 28, Saturday:  2 pm — 5 pm Telescope Workshop with Dr Francisco Diego of University College London.  Lecture Theatre NMM.  

February 6, Monday 7:15 pm:  The Universe — The Big Picture.   A lecture by Marcus Chown, cosmology consultant of the New Scientist magazine and BBC Sky at Night magazine.  Lecture Theatre NMM

March 6, Monday 7:15 pm:  Lecture by Dr Michael Leggett FRAS, FBIS.  On Astronomical Instrumentation before the Telescope.   Dr Leggett’s projects include work for SETI, the British Astronomical Assoc., Safeguard UK, and the Planetary Society.   Lecture Theatre NMM

March 25, Saturday and

April 2, Sunday both at 2 pm:  Free guided tours of the new Time galleries at the Royal Observatory by Jane (Mar 25) and Mike (Apr 2).  The galleries are due to re-open on February 15 and the Museum would like to have our feedback on the new displays etc.   Guests welcome.

April 3, Monday 7:15 pm:  A members’ evening of talks by Flamsteed members, plus a Planetarium Show in the Neptune Planetarium by Tony Sizer.    Lecture Theatre NMM.

May 12, Friday:  Visit to the Rutherford Appleton Labs, Didcot, Oxfordshire.  Details later.

May 29, Monday:  Star Lecture —   The Origins of the Universe by Sir Arnold Wolfendale FRS, 14th Astronomer Royal.   Free to Flamsteed members and their guests, otherwise £7.50.  Lecture Theatre NMM

 

 

We will also be holding visits to the NMM Neptune Planetarium, and viewing sessions with the Great Equatorial 28 inch linked to the museum’s Evenings with the Stars programme, starting November 2005.   We will confirm specific dates nearer the time.  The Flamsteed sessions run from 9:00 pm to 10:00 pm, weather permitting.  At present the museum’s announced programme covers:

 

Mars, Uranus, and the Moon — November 11 & 12, and December 9, 2005

Saturn and its rings — February 3, 8 & 10 and March 10, 13, 17 & 18, 2006

 

In addition, we are planning further training sessions for members who would like to help run public solar observing sessions using the Hydrogen-alpha Coronado telescope, and also anyone interested in being trained to assist the ROG astronomers at sessions with the 28-inch.   If you would like to attend either of these types of training and haven’t registered your interest, please e-mail Mike at mike@flamsteed.info.
