Flamsteed Astronomy Society

Programme of Events 2004-05

Meetings will start with reports from our sub-committees and a chat about topics of interest by an FAS member before the main lecture or event of the evening.   Unless otherwise stated all meetings will be in the Lecture Theatre of the National Maritime Museum (NMM) and will run from 6.45 - 9.30 p.m.  Members are welcome to arrive early for a cup of coffee and to meet other members before the meetings start.

 

2004

 

July 24  Saturday:  12.30pm onwards - Annual picnic. Join other members for a lunchtime picnic in the ROG South Building garden when we will be having a treasure hunt with prizes galore.  Family and friends very welcome.  Bring your own picnic.

August 24 Tuesday: at 7.30 p.m. The Skies in Autumn a Planetarium show by Dr John Griffiths of the ROG.  Say farewell to the Planetarium in the South Building, ROG.  Followed by a telescope viewing session on the heath with Dr Griffiths and a drink in the Hare and Billet.

September 13:   Monday 6.30pm   Art and Astronomical Phenomena by Sarah Tombs.  This lecture is free to FAS members.  The Friends are also offering a 50% discount for the supper afterwards to FAS members. Lecture Theatre NMM 

October 4  Monday: Our Annual General Meeting followed by a welcome return by Gilbert Satterthwaite who will take A Fresh Look at Sir George Airy (Lecture Theatre NMM).

October 9 Saturday at 14:00 & 15:30 — Behind the Scenes at the ROG Altazimuth and South Buildings — a special tour for FAS Members by the ROG’s Graham Dolan.   Places limited.  Contact Jane Bendall to reserve.

November 2 Tuesday: The Rings of Saturn & the Cassini Mission by Professor Carl Murray, Department of Applied Mathematics, Queen Mary, University of London.  Lecture Theatre NMM

December 6  Monday:  6:30pm  FAS Bookmart followed by Guy Hurst (Vice President BAA & Editor The Astronomer) on The Search for Novae and Supernovae — from Visual to Laptop .    Lecture Theatre NMM

December 13  Monday 7:00 pm:  Christmas Party Fun, food, drink and a quiz….no lectures, in the Octagon Room, ROG. 

 

2005

 

January 4  Tuesday: Dark-Skies Developments a talk by Bob Mizon FRAS, Co-ordinator, British Astronomical Association Campaign for Dark Skies in the Lecture Theatre, NMM

January 15 Saturday from 3 pm — Telescope workshop with Francisco Diego in the Lecture Theatre NMM.  Followed by viewing on Blackheath weather permitting.  Bring your telescopes.

February 7  Monday: Bursting the Solar Bubble a talk by Professor Richard Harrison, Head of the Space Physics Division and Head of the Solar Physics Group at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in Abingdon in the Lecture Theatre NMM.

March 11-20:  National Science Week, linked to Einstein and Time and Space.  The ROG is hoping we will be able to provide volunteers for its programme.

March 14  Monday:  Star Lecture.  Black Holes and White Rabbits by Professor John Brown, Astronomer Royal of Scotland (Lecture Theatre NMM)    Einstein’s Birthday

March 28 Monday:  CANCELLED Successes and Problems of Contemporary Cosmology by Professor Michael Joyce of the Department of Physics, University of Paris. Lecture Theatre NMM.

April 9  Saturday: 2.00 p.m. Memoirs of a Young Astronomer in Herstmonceux by Rosemary Selmes, now a cardiac rehab specialist but formerly a professional astronomer at the RGO (Lecture Theatre NMM).

May 14  Saturday:  Visit to the Orwell Observatory near Ipswich, and Playford, home of Sir George Biddell Airy.

June 9 Thursday:  Planetarium shows by Dr John Griffiths for Flamsteed members and their guests, plus members’ talk by Mike Dryland on “The Great Refractors”

 

We will also be holding viewing sessions with the Great Equatorial 28 inch linked to the museum’s Evenings with the Stars programme from 9.00 – 10.00 pm weather permitting on the following evenings:

 

2005 January 14, 21, and 28

February 11, 18, and 25

March 4, 11, and 12

 

EXTRA!  March 21-22, Monday & Tuesday:  Two private evenings for Flamsteed members with the 28-inch Great Equatorial.   Blackheath Gate will be open from 6:45—7:15pm and then from 8:00—8:15 pm.  March 21 Monday is weather dependent — watch your e-mail and the website or phone 020 8852 6533 from 5:00 pm onwards.  We will only continue if the weather is clear.  March 22 Tuesday will go ahead even if the weather is unkind.  Tony will demonstrate the prowess of the telescope and if all else fails, we will resort to videos.
