Programme of Events 2011/12

PROGRAMME OF EVENTS 2011-12   Unless otherwise stated, meetings are open to Flamsteed members only (no need for members to book) and will be in the Lecture Theatre of the National Maritime Museum (NMM).  Meetings normally run from 7.15 to 9:45 pm and will start with announcements and a chat about topics of interest by a Flamsteed member before the main lecture or event of the evening.   Members are welcome to arrive from 6.30 pm for a cup of coffee and to meet other members before the meetings start.  For details of 2010-11 and previous programmes, please refer to meetings & events, reports & pictures

2011-12 Programme continued over/

Mark is a Royal Society University Research Fellow at the University of Oxford. His research interests focus on the field of time domain astronomy, cosmology and in particular the study of "Dark Energy", the mysterious and unknown force driving the accelerating expansion of our Universe. He studies the various experimental methods available to probe and help understand dark energy, with an emphasis on the use of cosmic explosions known as type Ia supernovae, using new, large astronomical surveys.

Nick is Professor of Psychiatry at the University of California San Francisco.  He directs a NASA-funded research programme on the psychological and interpersonal issues affecting astronauts and cosmonauts in space, and he has co-authored a textbook entitled  Space Psychology and Psychiatry.  He has given a number of talks on celestial cartography to amateur and professional groups and he has published articles on this topic in magazines and journals such as Sky and Telescope, Mercury, Imago Mundi, and the Journal of the International Map Collectors Society.

Marek is the Public Astronomer at the Royal Observatory Greenwich. Specialising in the study of super massive black holes and the evolution of galaxies, Marek has 15 years of science research in UK universities, including five years as a PPARC Advanced Fellow at the University of Edinburgh’s Institute for Astronomy and two years at the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore, home of NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope
